When someone in Nairobi searches “plumber near me”, “office furniture Kenya” or “safari to Maasai Mara”, they rarely scroll past the first page. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making your website the best answer to those searches. It isn’t a trick. It’s a combination of technical quality, useful content and a trustworthy presence.
1. Start with what customers search for
List the services you offer and the words customers use for them, including locations (“in Mombasa”, “Nairobi CBD”) and questions (“how much does…”). Each important service deserves its own page targeting its own search intent, rather than one page trying to rank for everything.
2. Get the technical basics right
- Fast loading, especially on mobile data.
- Mobile-friendly layout.
- HTTPS.
- Clean, readable URLs.
- An XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
- No broken links or duplicate pages.
3. Optimise each page
- A unique, descriptive title tag and meta description.
- One clear main heading (H1) that says what the page is about.
- Helpful content that answers the searcher’s question.
- Descriptive image alt text.
- Internal links to related pages.
- Structured data (schema) for your business, services and FAQs.
4. Own your local presence
Set up and complete your Google Business Profile with the correct address, phone number, hours, photos and categories. Keep your business name, address and phone number consistent everywhere they appear online, and ask happy customers for reviews.
5. Publish useful content
Articles that answer real customer questions (costs, comparisons, how-tos) attract searchers early in their decision and build trust. Consistency beats volume.
6. Measure and improve
Use Google Search Console to see which searches show your site and which pages get clicks, and analytics to see which visits become enquiries. SEO takes time; steady improvements compound.
